Our Purpose

Our Mission

Jesus prayed, “I do not pray for these (the disciples) only, but also for those who believe in me through their word, that they may all be one; even as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. The glory which thou hast given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one, I in them and thou in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that thou hast sent me and hast loved them even as thou hast loved me.” (John 17:20-23)

JESUS SAID THAT THE REASON FOR UNITY WAS SO THAT THE WORLD MAY BELIEVE.   Jesus says it two times!  He also says that we are to have the glory that the Father gave to Himself so that we can be one.  (The glory of Christ is much more than just signs and wonders.) Could it be that if we share Christ’s goal for unity so that the world may believe, then the gifts associated with the glory of Christ will be more evident?

Now imagine a gathering of Church leaders all gathered together from around the world.  The people and denominations broadly represent the Church and are those who recognize Jesus as savior and Lord.  There will be no committee meetings or special speakers.  Essentially, they will have only gathered for one purpose--to earnestly seek God, praying that He will spiritually unify His Church, and wait for His response.  (Of course, the logistics will need to be worked out.  Different churches have different traditions on how to worship. But most important, we can all seek God praying at the same time, in the same locality, in our own way with prayers of adoration, confession, repentance, thanksgiving, and appeal.)

A similar gathering happened in 2 Chronicles 20 where King Jehoshaphat gathered the nation together to seek the Lord.  Jehoshaphat prayed on behalf of the people, saying, “Art thou not our God?  We understand that when disaster comes upon us, if we cry to Thee in our affliction, Thou wilt hear and save. We are powerless . . . we do not know what to do, but OUR EYES ARE ON YOU.”  God gave an immediate reply after Jehoshaphat’s prayer through a priest who prophesied that the battle was not the nation’s but the Lord alone would defeat their enemy--and thus it happened.

Just as Jehoshaphat did not know what to do, so also we do not know what to do to bring about the unity that God desires for the Church.  How could we know what to do?  This is a supernatural unity--like Jesus has with the Father—not something we can just decide.  It must come from God’s supernatural work.  “OUR EYES ARE ON YOU” also needs to be our corporate prayer if a solution is to be found.

I think that this is where God is leading.  The seed of the idea was planted last January 2018. While waking up one morning, my first thoughts were that if the Church leaders would come together and ask God, He would solve the problem of our disunity.

In September, I said to God, “Who will believe that such a gathering is possible? Even I am not 100% sure You are calling me to this.  It would be good if you would give me a sign.”  That week I had a dream in which I was outdoors and knew that I was with everyone else on earth.  God had just won the final victory. We were all greatly rejoicing with each other.  God the Father and Jesus were standing side by side with an arm over or around the other.  As part of the rejoicing, someone close to the Son gave me a hug.  The hug also seemed to affirm that now, everything will be fine.  We responded in the same way all around us.  I sensed that that everyone would receive all they needed from then on, and that this was how God had wanted it once before when we had lost the chance to have this relationship with God.  And then I woke up.

After the dream, I was elated. I knew the dream was the sign that I had asked for, but wondered why it did not appear to be more related to Church unity.  Weeks later, I was reading, A Gathering Momentum, by Roger Sutton.  Roger’s book focuses on church unity.  He states, “The gathering God has placed His arms of love around us, and we, in turn, with our arms around each other, reach out to gather all things together under Him.”

The simple idea of a world gathering of Church leaders--to earnestly seek God for a solution to our disunity, and wait for His response--is the project that I am working on.  This is not like any other gathering that has ever been.  This an event that will change the world in that it will obviously have a positive impact on our witness to the world.

God has many times asked us to depend upon Him, to wait for Him, to seek Him, to have faith in Him.  Obviously God made these promises because God loves us; He wants to bless us; we are chosen to be His children.  I am confident that the God--who died because of His love for the Church, who prayed for our unity, who promised to respond when we seek Him--would respond to his children when we unite to seek His solution.
